Condolence etiquette: what to send and how to word the card

For condolences, less is correct: white and green, a quiet arrangement, few words. A practical guide to what to send and what to avoid.

A quiet white flower arrangement with green foliage in a simple vase

Short answer: choose a white and green arrangement with no bright colour and nothing celebratory attached, send it to the family home or to the place where condolences are being received, and write one or two lines at most. Restraint here is respect, not thrift.

Colours

White, ivory and green only. White roses, white lilies and gypsophila (baby's breath) with quiet foliage is the familiar combination, and it is appropriate in every case.

What to avoid: red, bright yellow, sunflowers, multi-coloured mixes, balloons, and any festive ribbon or trim. All of these read as celebration in a place that cannot hold it.

Browse get well & sympathy and choose the white arrangements.

The form

A quiet vase arrangement is the right choice: it arrives finished, and it doesn't ask the family to trim stems or hunt for a container on a day like this. Avoid glossy presentation boxes and anything that looks like a celebratory gift.

Where to send it

In Jordan, condolences are usually received at the family home or in a condolence hall or diwan, often on set days. Ask someone close to the family about the place and the days before you send, and avoid sending flowers to a workplace.

Bear in mind that some families prefer no flowers at all, and would rather you came or called. If you aren't sure, asking is better than assuming.

Wording the card

Brevity is the rule. One sincere sentence, with no detail and no attempt to explain what happened:

  • "With our deepest condolences to you and your family."
  • "Thinking of you all, and wishing you patience and comfort."
  • "May they rest in peace. You are in our thoughts."

Sign with your full name, or your family or company name, so the bereaved know who shared the moment. The handwritten card is free with every order, and no invoice ever travels with the flowers.

Timing and delivery

The first days of mourning are the right time to send. Inside Amman, same-day delivery is available for orders placed before 5 PM; other governorates need additional time depending on the area. See the delivery page.

Give the exact name of the venue in the address, and a phone number for a family member or an organiser — not for those closest to the loss.
