Congratulating a new baby: timing, place and choosing flowers

The important question isn't which bouquet, but where to send it: the hospital or the house. The answer changes everything else.

Short answer: send to the house rather than the hospital unless you've confirmed the ward accepts flowers. Choose a small or medium vase arrangement in soft colours with a light scent, and address the congratulations to both parents rather than to the baby alone.

Hospital or home?

Many maternity wards and neonatal units don't accept flowers at all, and the rooms are usually small and full of visitors. Even where flowers are allowed, the mother then has to carry the arrangement home along with everything else.

The safe move: ask a family member first, or send to the house on the day she comes home — where she'll enjoy the flowers far more anyway.

What to send

  • A vase arrangement, not a bouquet. A new mother has enough to do without hunting for a vase and trimming stems.
  • Small or medium, so it fits on a side table without taking over the room.
  • Soft colours: white, ivory, pale pink, gentle yellow.
  • Light scent. Skip oriental and stargazer lilies in a small room — their perfume is overwhelming indoors.

Timing

The first days after a birth are crowded and exhausting. Sending two or three days after the family gets home is usually kinder than sending on day one — and a congratulation that arrives a week later, when the house has quietened down, is appreciated more than you'd expect.

What to write on the card

Address the parents. One line is enough: "Congratulations on your new arrival — wishing you all health and rest." Use the baby's name if you know it, and don't guess if you don't. Sign it. The handwritten card is free with every order, and no invoice travels with the gift.

Arranging delivery

Inside Amman, same-day delivery is available for orders placed before 5 PM. Elsewhere, order at least a day ahead. Leave the phone number of someone alert at the house — a new mother may well not answer hers. Areas and timings are on the delivery page.
